![]() ![]() “It is definitely possible to play in town too much. One of the questions I have had for a long time as a local musician is, “can a band play out too much?” I posed this question to Kreitzer to get some perspective from an experienced member of the musical community. If you tour and you get out of town, you’re going to get famous.” When asked about what makes an awesome band, Kreitzer remarked, “if a band’s going nowhere, there are two possible reasons: One, they f***ing suck, or two, they just aren’t putting the work in. It was just an awesome group of bands and an awesome night.” They played with Murder by Death and Minus the Bear, their set was two and a half hours, and there were only 20 people there. “My favorite moment in Gainesville music history was when Braid reunited in 2004 or 2005 and played Market Street. Today, we continue with a snapshot of Gainesville history and a look at what it means to be a successful band. Last week’s portion of our talk with Gainesville punk legend Gary Kreitzer ended with an explanation of how to use show trades to expand a band’s network of venues and fans. **The “Inception” noise, the closest thing I could find to the sound of a bass cab gone wrong in a small club: *A real video of the Catalyst performing live: Therefore, we use minimal or no guitar distortion, and I use a guitar tuned in B standard, or baritone tuning*** to fill in the low-end. We decided to use only equipment and effects that would sound pleasant in small clubs, were we do the majority of our playing. While I do love the band the Catalyst,* whom i had the privilege of seeing last October at Fest 9, i was disappointed when all I could hear of their set was the sound of 1982 Bar being violently shaken to its foundation by a bass cab turned up higher than the PA could output and EQ’d to “BBBRRRRRZZZZZRRRWAAAAAWWWWW.**” Our reasons for this choice in instrumentation (and our tone as a whole) were born in small, cramped clubs, where blaring bass cabs and sloppily preset distortion pedals create a cloud of fuzz and vibration that no melodic expression can penetrate. One audience member, Emma Fulgham, compared the set to, “having a moist towelette dripping of epic dowsed on my face.”Īnyone who has seen one of the few live performances Prodigal Sun has put on, whether it was at the 1982 Bar, the Civic Media Center, or even at Studio Percussion, Inc., has surely noticed that there is nary a single bass guitar to be seen onstage. Luckily, with the help of Jonathan’s expert trumpet playing and a cameo from Carpadium guitarist Ryan Bell, we managed to pull it off, to a surprisingly enthusiastic crowd response. ![]() With only about 14 minutes of our set filled, we decided “Sober,” the last song of the set, would have to become an epic, 20-minute musical odyssey. Scheduling rehearsal was an uphill battle, and we were faced with the task of putting together a 30-minute set in one 30-minute practice.Īfter stumbling through Tool’s “Sober” and “Hush,” we decided to throw caution to the wind and add our rendition of Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing In The Name.” ![]() Justin’s birthday is March 23, so on Friday, March 25, we booked a birthday show for him at 1982 Bar, with local acts Plane Out Of Context,* Carpadium,** and Shotgun Diplomacy.*** The only catch was that Cody was out of town and couldn’t make it.īeing the resourceful type he is, Justin proposed that he and I team up with Carpadium frontman Jonathan Ward to play a Tool cover set. If you’re over 21, cover is $2 cheaper, and drinks are quite easy on the wallet as always.įor more information on the bands playing, check out these links: Regardless of what crack team of musical assassins is assembled for this night of ground breaking entertainment, you will have a fantastic time.ĭoors will be at 9 p.m., and the music will start flowing shortly after.
